They originally cultivated in Asia and were expressed through writings, songs, and art. During medieval times, they were also used to act as a medicinal herb to help with headaches, and occasionally asthma. During the 19th-20th century, peonies made their way to the United States. "In 1902, the American Peony Society was founded. In cooperation with Cornell University, the society established nomenclature for peonies used to this day." (Frank Whittemore, 2017)

A peony's characteristics are certainly quite the view for the eye. Not only can they come in almost every color, but they can also get up to 10 inches long! If they are treated well, peony plants can live up to 100 years old. The stems of peony plants can be usually from 3-5 feet long. Although they are such beautiful flowers when they have been in full bloom, they will only last 7-10 days.

There are also Greek myths that relate to the peony plant. "Paeon, a student under Aesculapius, the god of medicine, was well aware of the medicinal qualities of peony plants. He used them to heal a wound suffered by the god, Pluto. Pluto saved Paeon's life: he turned him into a peony plant." (David Beaulieu, 2019) This story was a great representation of how a peony was added in history and first came about as a flower that was chosen because of its beauty and talent.

"Peonies are the floral symbol of China, the state flower of Indiana, and the 12th wedding anniversary flower."(Micaela English, 2015) The peony is known to be the 12th wedding anniversary flower because it symbolizes good fortune and healthy marriage. You can find the flower of a peony on teacups, plates, and bowls. They have become very common in the United States and you can usually find one in someone's garden. Their fragrance has like a sweet rose or citrus smell which is also why a lot of people love to buy them.

There is so much more to a peony than a lot of people think, and it is included in a lot of art while also serving so many purposes. It was medicinal, it was used in art, writings, and songs, it has an intriguing history, but most importantly it's stunning characteristics make peonies one of the most well-known flowers. It shows culture, beauty, and astonishing colors, but most importantly, its journey to becoming the lovely flower that it has evolved to be today.
